‘Fusus’ tornatus Wolff, 1897 non Gould, 1840

* Fusus tornatus n. sp. — Wolff 1897: 280, pl. 27, fig. 8 [non Fusus tornatus Gould, 1840 ].

Discussion. Wolff (1897) illustrated a broad fusiform specimen with delicate spiral sculpture and close-set growth lines, resulting in a delicate, cancellate pattern. Aperture and siphonal canal are unknown. It is unclear in which genus this species should be placed. The name Fusus tornatus is preoccupied by Gould (1840) for an extant buccinid from the northwestern Atlantic [= Neptunea vinlandica Fraussen & Terryn, 2007 ]. Therefore, the fossil species from Bavaria will need a new name. As we have not seen the specimens, we refrain from introducing a new name but assume that it could be a Tudiclidae related to Euthriofusus .

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Eggenburgian/Ottnangian (Early Miocene): North Alpine Foreland Basin: Thalberggraben ( Germany) ( Wolff 1897).
