Basionym: Sesleria heuflerana var. latifolia Adamović (1904: 138) View in CoL
Lectotype (designated here):— SERBIA. [Eastern]: In pascuis alpinis m. [montis] Suva planina, Solo calc., June 1896, Adamović s.n. ( W 1897-0006748 !). Image available at http://herbarium.univie.ac.at/database/detail.php? ID =258637.
Protologue information:—“In graminosis calcareis montanis et praealpinis m. Rtanj, Suva Planina, Vidlič, Basara, Leskovik, Malinik et Sto (babušn.)”.
– Sesleria argentea Savi sensu Pančić 1874: 741 View in CoL ;
– Sesleria argentea Savi sensu Petrović 1882: 884 View in CoL ;
– Sesleria nitida View in CoL Ten. sensu Tatić 1976: 327–328.
Nomenclature:— Plants occurring on the mountains of Eastern Serbia were described by Adamović (1904) as a variety of S. heuflerana Schur (1856: 203) : Sesleria heuflerana var. latifolia View in CoL . He cited in synonymy “ S. argentea View in CoL aut. Serb, non Savi”, most likely referring to Pančić (1874: 741) and Petrović (1882: 884), who listed S. argentea View in CoL for the territory of Serbia in their works. The following year, Degen (1905: 133) elevated this taxon to the species level, as S. latifolia View in CoL . Although several localities were cited in the protologue, we found only one specimen collected by Adamović at one of the cited localities, with a plant that fits the description. Since other original material may exist, we designate the specimen deposited in W as lectotype.
Taxonomy: —In the first synthetic survey of the Balkan flora, Hayek (1933) reported S. latifolia for the territories of Serbia, Bulgaria and Thessaly ( Greece). However, he also reported for Serbia S. nitida Tenore (1815b: 20) . This was followed by Tatić (1976), who included both S. latifolia and S. nitida in the taxonomic treatment of the genus for the Flora of Serbia. Tatić (1976: 327–328) cited in synonymy of S. nitida Pančić’ s (1874: 741) records for S. argentea , listing the following localities in Serbia: “Rtanj, Leskovik, Suva planina Mt., Mučanj and other”. Based on our current knowledge of these taxa and field investigations (Kuzmanović & Lakušić, pers. obs.), the only species of Sesleria sect. Argenteae occurring in the localities cited by Tatić (1976), as well as in other mountains in Eastern Serbia, is S. latifolia . Sesleria nitida is endemic to Italy, occurring in the central–southern Apennines and Sicily ( Brullo & Giusso del Galdo 2006, Valdés & Scholz 2009). Therefore, the records of S. nitida for the territory of Serbia should probably be attributed to S. latifolia ; however, the relevant specimens require review to confirm this. Furthermore, the records of S. argentea in Pančić (1874: 741) and Petrović (1882: 884) also refer to S. latifolia . The name S. latifolia is accepted and in use ( Valdés & Scholz 2009, Clayton et al. 2016).
