Mipus isosceles (Barnard, 1959) View in CoL

Figs 127, 128, 193

Coralliophila isosceles Barnard, 1959: 191 View in CoL , fig. 39a.

TYPE MATERIAL. — Holotype SAM (a copy of the original illustration reported also by Kosuge & Suzuki 1985: pl. 50,

fig. 8).

TYPE LOCALITY. — Eastern South Africa.

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — South Africa, 3 lv ( MO) .

Fiji. BORDAU 1: stn DW 1497, 18°44’S, 178°25’W, 335-350, 1 dd (Figs 127, 128, 193).

DISTRIBUTION. — South Africa (Barnard 1959; Kosuge 1986c). Fiji, empty shell in 335-350 m, First record for the Pacific Ocean.

REMARKS. — Protoconch 780 Μm high and 840 Μm wide at the base, of 1.6 dome-shaped whorls. Sculpture possibly partly abraded; small pustules scattered over the surface, sinuous collabral growth lines on the final half-whorl. The single specimen collected fits the original description and figure, Kosuge’s (1986c, pl. 27, fig. 6) figured specimen and the additional samples from South Africa. It has the diagnostic characteristics that distinguish it from M. eugeniae : a smaller shell, fewer and broader spiral cords and a shorter siphonal canal. The protoconch was sufficiently well preserved to study in 2 of the 3 South African specimens and is concordant with the Fijian shell.
