Asplenium marinum Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 1081. 1753.
"Habitat in Anglia, insulis Stoechadum. Burs." RCN: 7840.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 1250.14 ( LINN) ; Herb. Clifford: 474, Asplenium 3 ( BM) ; Herb. Burser XX: 39, syntype ( UPS) ; [icon] in Morison, Pl. Hist. Univ. 3: 573, s. 14, t. 3, f. 25. 1699.
Generitype of Asplenium Linnaeus (vide Smith, Hist. File. 316. 1875).
Current name: Asplenium marinum L. View in CoL ( Aspleniaceae ).
Note: Reichstein (in Bot. Helv. 91: 105. 1981) has variously treated material in LINN (evidently sheet 1250.14) and (l.c. 92: 41. 1982) Herb. Clifford: 474, Asplenium 3 ( BM) as the lectotype. However, unusually, Linnaeus explicitly cited a Burser collection (identifiable as Herb. Burser XX: 39 by Linnaeus’ "Habitat in... insulis Stoechadum") in the protologue. As a syntype, it must take precedence over original material in the designation of a lectotype (Art. 9.10). This formal choice has apparently not yet been made.
