Diagnosis. The more slender antennomeres of the antennal capitulum (compare Figs. 158 and 166 View Figs ) conveniently distinguish the members of this species from those of Ichnea atra Opitz , new species. Also, unlike in I. atra , the members of this species have the pronotum densely vested with golden setae.
Description. Size: Length 7.0 mm; width 2.8 mm. Form ( Fig. 144 View Figs ): Oblong subovoid. Integumental color ( Fig. 41): Cranium mostly black in upper frons, vertex, and upper epicranium, antennal apex yellow; pronotal integument mostly black, anterior angles yellow; elytra black. Head: HW/PW 1.0; frons indented; EW/VW 2.1; antennal funicle not compressed ( Fig. 158 View Figs ). Thorax: PL/PW 1.0; elytra subovoid, EL /PL 4.7; EL/EW 2.1; pronotum densely vested with golden setae; anterior margin of protibia with 11 spines. Male genitalia: Aedeagus as in Fig. 187 View Figs .
Variation. Size: Length 4.5–7.7 mm; width 1.7–2.5 mm. The extent of yellow at, and posterior to, the pronotal anterior angle varies. It extends to the posterior angle in two of the paratypes. Further- more, in some specimens there is a faint oblique fascia at the middle of the elytral disc.
Variation. Specimens have been collected during October through December, and during February; one at 350 m elevation.
Distribution. The species is known only from northwestern and central Brazil ( Map 2 View Map 2 ).
Etymology. The specific epithet is a Latin compound name stemming from the noun acanthus (= corner) and the adjective melina (= honey-colored) and refers to the light coloration on the anterior angles of the pronotum.
