Diagnosis. Body medium-sized to large, but most species large; terminal flagellomere often slightly acute apically, rarely rounded; median flagellomeres often longer than wide, rarely weakly wider than long; pedicellus petiolate in dorsal view; scapus highly modified and subcylindrical, inner side of scapus with single area, without a second area, resulting in a continuous margin, and sharply and concavely narrowed at the base; outer sides of antennal sockets conspicuously angulate dorsally; eye glabrous, not or weakly emarginate; face glabrous or weakly punctate; clypeus moderately narrow and without dorsal carina; malar suture moderately developed; labio-maxillary complex normal, not elongate; frons narrowly and deeply impressed medially, convex laterally, with a median groove; mesosoma usually largely smooth and shiny; notauli often distinctly impressed anteriorly, rarely shallow; scutellar sulcus crenulate; propodeum largely smooth; precoxal suture absent; angle between veins 1-SR and C+SC+R of fore wing more than 70°; vein 1-SR+M of fore wing often more or less straight, sometimes weakly curved or angled after arising from 1-M; vein 3-CU1 of fore wing not expanded posteriorly; hind wing vein 1r-m often distinctly shorter than vein SC+R1; apex of hind wing vein C+SC+R with 1 thickened basal bristle; base of hind wing with evenly setose area near vein cu-a; claws simple; fourth tarsomere with medium-sized bristles, remaining far removed from apex of telotarsus ventrally; lateral areas of first metasomal tergite narrow to medium-sized and not completely flattened; second metasomal tergite with a relatively large and smooth medio-basal area, and with oblique lateral grooves; antero-lateral grooves of third tergite often long, rarely reduce, and lateral parts of tergite wider than 1.3 × its medial part; ovipositor normal, subapically upper valve with nodus, and its lower valve with teeth ventrally; ovipositor sheath relatively long, often longer than body, rarely somewhat shorter.
Biology. Most species are idiobiont ectoparasitoids of wood and bark-boring Coleoptera larvae ( Cerambycidae , Buprestidae , Curculionidae ), and some species are ectoparasitoids of larvae of Lepidoptera (Sesiidae) and Hymenoptera (Argidae) ( Quicke et Sharkey 1989; Yu et al. 2016).
