Etymology. The name is derived from “Scott” in honour of Thomas Scott who described the first species, and “- oecia” from the Greek word “Ɩκοσ ” meaning house, from which the terms ecology and economy have been derived; this ending has become standard for many halocyprid genera.
Type species. Scottoecia arabica View in CoL nov. sp.
Composition. The new genus includes five species, all previously classified as Bathyconchoecia species :
Bathyconchoecia darcythompsoni ( Scott, 1909) View in CoL .
Bathyconchoecia foveolata Deevey, 1968 View in CoL .
Bathyconchoecia crosnieri Poulsen, 1969b View in CoL .
Bathyconchoecia subrufa Angel, 1970 View in CoL .
Bathyconchoecia lacunosa sensu James, 1973 View in CoL .
Differential diagnosis. Large Euconchoeciinae species (♀ 2.9–6.6 mm, ♂ 2.6–6.25 mm) with carapaces often ornamented with overall sculpturing of a faint scaly pattern, sometimes with pits, and beneath the incisure on the anterior margin the scalar pattern may become aligned to form striae that initially run parallel to the carapace margin but then curve ventrally to intercept the ventral margin obliquely. The carapace glands on each valve are quite large and open symmetrically just below the posterior dorsal corner within a sinus that in some species is located on the tip of a small tubercle. The rostra are long and the incisure is broad and open. The posterior margin of the carapace is either smooth or lined with blunt denticles. In common with Bathyconchoecia species , there is no frontal organ. The structures of the mandibular basale and coxale are characteristic, as illustrated in figures 3F and 6B (see also Deevey 1975, fig. 7f for B. foveolata ) and are quite distinct from those of all other halocyprids. In males the dorsal seta on the terminal segment of the sixth limb is exceptionally long and is much longer than the other two terminal setae ( Figs 2B View FIGURE 2 and 5I View FIGURE 5 ), (see also Deevey 1968 fig. 12C for B. foveolata ; Angel 1970 fig. 1G for B. subrufa ; Poulsen 1969a, fig. 4q for B. crosnieri , contrast with Deevey 1968, fig. 2e for B. paulula ). The copulatory appendage is banana-shaped with oblique muscles only at the base.
