Discussion: Described as a subgenus of Soriculus and often included in that genus ( Hoffmann, 1985 b). Hutterer (1994 b) presented evidence that Soriculus , Episoriculus and Chodsigoa are not closely related to each other, and that Pleistocene and Pliocene shrews from Europe referred to Episoriculus by many authors (e.g., Rzebik-Kowalska, 1981) belong to the extinct genus Asoriculus , a conclusion widely accepted by paleontologists ( Reumer, 1998; Rzebik-Kowalska, 2002).
