Helianthus annuus Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 904. 1753.
"Habitat in Peru, Mexico." RCN: 6537.
Lectotype (Watson in Pap. Michigan Acad. Sci. 9: 358. 1929): Herb. Linn. No. 1024.1 ( LINN) .
Generitype of Helianthus Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 183. 1929).
Current name: Helianthus annuus L. ( Asteraceae ).
Note: Jeffrey (in Curtis’s Bot. Mag. 183: 33. 1978) rejected Watson’s choice of type, partly on the grounds that it conflicted with the protologue (it does not show "fol. omnibus cordatis" according to Jeffrey, pers. comm., Oct 1992). However, he rejected 1024.1 (LINN) in favour of "Corona solis I" of Tabernaemontanus (Eicones Pl. 763. 1590), which did not form part of the protologue. This later choice is therefore in conflict with Art. 9.17(b), and Watson’s choice stands. This does not appear to cause any nomenclatural difficulties.
