14. Thismia tuberculata Hatusima (1976: 4) View in CoL

Type: — JAPAN. Kyushu, [border area of prefectures Kagoshima and Miyazaki]: Mt. Kirishima , in evergreen oak forest mixed with Machilus japonica , 520 m, 24 September 1972, S. Sako s.n. (syntypes RYU or URO, not located; KAG, not located) .

Distribution: — Japan (Kyushu); possibly extinct ( Suetsugu & Ishida 2011, Tsukaya 2016).

Nomenclatural notes: —In the original description of Thismia tuberculata, Hatusima (1976) cited two duplicates of the type gathering, one “in herb. Ryukyu Univ.” and the other “in herb. Kagoshima Univ.”, without indication of a holotype. The University of the Ryukyus is currently known to have at least two Herbaria belonging to its different faculties, RYU and URO, whereas the Herbarium of Kagoshima University was incorporated into KAG ( Thiers 2024 [continuously updated]). The type specimens were not found in any of these three Herbaria (Kenji Suetsugu & Shuichiro Tagane, pers. comm.). Apparently, further efforts are needed to trace the type material of this species.
