Octopus pantherinus [sic] Rochebrune & Mabille, 1887 [sic] – Forcelli (2000: 140) in discussion of species not cited from the PMM.

Remarks: A valid species of Octopus s.s.

Enteroctopus Rochebrune & Mabille, 1889 View in CoL : H.7. [dated 1887 in error]

Remarks: For a discussion of the type species, see Hochberg (1998: 203). He discarded an earlier type designation of E. membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille as he considered that species to be unidentifiable and a nomen dubium, and declared the other included species, Octopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852 to be the type “by virtual monotypy.” His action was effectively “fixation by elimination” which is inadmissible under Article 69.4 of the Code (I.C.Z.N. 1999) [Article 69b of the Code in effect in 1998 (I.C.Z.N. 1985)]. As at least one author is stated to have considered the Rochebrune & Mabille species to be a synonym of Gould’s species, there should be no problem as the type species will simply be a junior synonym. However, Article 69a of the 1985 Code applies and no type designation after the first is valid. The type species may be cited as E. membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille by subsequent designation of Hoyle, 1910 = Octopus megalocyathus Gould, 1852 .] Resolution of this issue is left to cephalopod systematists.

Enteroctopus membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille, 1889 : H.7. [dated 1887 in error]

Octopus membranaceus Rochebrune & Mabille, 1891 View in CoL [sic] – Forcelli (2000: 140) in discussion of species not cited from the PMM.

Locality: “Baie Orange (Mission du cap Horn).”

Remarks: Considered to be a nomen dubium by Hochberg (1998: 203).
