Potamogeton perfoliatus Linnaeus (1753:126) , Fig 7

Perennial, rhizome slender to robust, stem slender to robust, terete, strongly branched.Leaves monomorphic; submersed leaves ovate sessile, cordate at base, clasping the stem, minutely denticulate at margin, at least in juvenile state, 16–100 mm long, 10–50 mm wide, 7–15 veined, obtuse to acute at apex; stipules not fused, 6–7 mm long, membranaceous, not persistent and easily eroding to fibrous remnants. Spike 5–15 mm long, peduncle 10–45 mm long, slightly thicker than the stem. Tepals 1 mm long, anthers 1 mm long. Carpels 4, fruits 2.5–3 mm long. Stele of atypical trio type (with two central bundles of unequal size), endodermis of O-type, interlacunar bundles absent, subepidermal bundles absent.

Worldwide distribution: —Europe, N and C Africa, W Asia ( Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine), East Asia, Australia, E North and C America.

Distribution in Iran: —North, Northeast, South, Southeast.

Flowering time: —From spring to autumn.
