Augochloropsis (Pseudaugochloropsis) basiatra Strand, 1910: 490 . Lectotype male (presently designated), Paraguay: Villa Morra (ZMHB, examined).
Pseudaugochloropsis basiatra ; Moure & Hurd, 1987: 230.
Comments
This species was placed in Pseudaugochlora by Moure & Hurd (1987) without examining the type material. More recently, Moure (pers. comm.) was able to study the type series and associated the species with Thectochlora .
Similarly to T. alaris , females of T. basiatra also show conspicuous variation in body size; for example, the maximum head width of specimens from Vila Velha, Paraná, varies from 1.78 to 2.02 mm. As mentioned under T. alaris , the females of these two species could not be distinguished on external features. Therefore, a diagnosis is presented only for males.
Based on male features, T. basiatra groups with T. hamata sp. nov. and T. mixta sp. nov. The male antennae in these three species has a small glabrous area in the middle of each flagellomere (character 04- 1 in the cladistic analysis). This kind of pubescence pattern is found in other halictine bees; as an example, McGinley (1986) has named these areas as oval tyli in Lasioglossum (Halictini) . In the phylogenetic analysis, T. basiatra came out as sister-group of T. hamata due to the non-produced posterior border of the male S4 (character 13, Figs. 16 and 18 View FIGURES 15 – 19 ).
Male diagnosis
Antennal flagellomeres II to XI subequal in length, short pubescence restricted to basal and apical one-third of the flagellomeres, leaving small glabrous areas in the middle of each flagellomere; face wider than long; fore leg trochanter without dorsal hook; S4 disc with sparse and short pubescence, medially with a tuft of very short setae.
Description
Male lectotype. Measurements. Eye: 1.12; cl: 0.45; c-a: 0.61; c-o: 0.79; mhl: 1.56; c- e: 0.2; mhw: 1.75; F4: 0.22; mml: 0.08; abl: 6.16. (1) Head. Wider than long. Supraclypeal area only weakly convex, its lateral portions with same curvature as adjacent paraocular surface. (2) Antennae. Flagellomeres II to XI subequal in length; on the anterior surface short pubescence restricted to basal and apical one-thirds of the flagellomeres, leaving a small glabrous area in the middle of each flagellomere; posterior surface of flagellomeres II to VII only weakly depressed in relation to anterior surface. (3) Mesoscutum. Outline, in dorsal view, of lateral half of projecting anterior border rounded. (4) Mesepisternum. Area below scrobal groove punctured, not rugulose. (5) Metapostnotum. Basal sulcus with few complete transverse carinae. (6) Propodeum. Punctation on dorso-lateral area dense, punctures about one-half puncture diameter apart. (7) Fore leg trochanter without dorsal hook, hook of mid leg trochanter short, about two-fifth trochanter width. (8) Metasoma. Disc of S4 with central patch of erect setae and few lateral hairs (as in Fig. 15 View FIGURES 15 – 19 ). (9) Genitalia. Not dissected (see Figs. 22 and 23 View FIGURES 20 – 25 ). (10) Body color. Metallic green with mandibles, labrum, clypeal apex, femora, tibiae and tarsi yellow.
Paralectotype female. Measurements. Eye: 1.18; cl: 0.43; c-a: 0.81; c-o: 0.98; mhl: 1.68; c-e: 0.2; mhw: 1.79; mml: 0.08; abl: 1.79. (1) Head. Wider than long. Supraclypeal area only weakly convex, its lateral portions with same curvature as adjacent paraocular surface; lower paraocular area with many decumbent and few erect hairs, the latter with very short branches, malar space short. (2) Mesoscutum. Outline, in dorsal view, of lateral half of projecting anterior border rounded. (3) Mesepisternum. Almost entirely covered with irregular punctures, not very rugulose. (4) Metapostnotum. Basal sulcus with few complete transverse carinae. (5) Propodeum. Entirely covered with fine punctation and with short plumose hairs. (6) Legs. Fore leg trochanter without dorsal hook; hook of mid leg trochanter short, about one-half trochanter width. (7) Metasoma. Punctures on marginal zone of T2 about 2–3 puncture diameters apart, denser on disc (about one puncture diameter apart). (8) Body color. Metallic green with brown legs.
Type material
The type series of Augochloropis basiatra deposited at ZMHB is composed of one male and two females. The male specimen, bearing the following labels “Asuncion,\ Paraguay \ Vila Morra\ 9.XI.05 \ J. D. ANISITS” “Augochlor\ opsis ba-\ siatra n\ Strand det.” “ Type ” “Zool. Mus.\ Berlin” “ Thectochlora \ alaris [male simbol]\ ( Vachal, 1904)\ Pe. J. S. Moure 1996” is here designated lectotype in order to stabilize the taxonomy of the group. The following label was added: “ LECTOTYPE \ Augochloropsis \ (Pseudaugochloropsis) basiatra \ Strand, 1910 \ desig. Gonçalves & Melo, 2006”. Paralectotypes: 1 female ( ZMHB), “Asuncion,\ Paraguay \ Vila Morra\ 30.XI.04 \ J. D. ANISITS” “Augochlor\ opsis ba-\ siatra n\ Strand det.” “ Type ” “Zool. Mus.\ Berlin”; 1 female with same data except “ 19.XI.05 ” and without any type label. The integument color of the lectotype is somewhat faded; it also lacks the left antenna beyond the 1st flagellomere.
