Coelogyne fuliginosa Lodd. ex Hooker (1849 View in CoL t. 4440), Seidenfaden (1975: 19, fig. 4 & 5), Comber (1990: 112), Pearce & Cribb (2002: 327), Clayton (2002: 52, pl. 3B). Type:— INDIA. Loddiges collector 1838 s.n. (holotype K “ Coelogyne fuliginosa View in CoL m Herb. Loddiges” no barcode, specimen on herbarium sheet K000079262).
Ecology and phenology:—Lithophyte and epiphyte on tall mossy trees, commonly along streams. Primary and secondary evergreen broad-leaved montane forests on limestone and granite at an elevation of 1000–1300 m a.s.l. Occasional. Flowers in February and September.
Distribution:— Vietnam, provinces Hoa Binh (with no exact location), and Lam Dong (Lac Duong District). Bhutan, NE India, Myanmar, Java?
Conservation status:—The evaluation of this species by the criteria proposed by the Red List ICUN (2019) is based on two poor collections, which give insufficient data to identify a certain conservation status. Hence, the national conservation status for this species should be identified as nationally Data Deficient (DD). Outside Vietnam, the species status should be designated as NE.
Notes:—The species is very close to Coelogyne fimbriata Lindley (1825 t. 868) and Coelogyne ovalis Lindley (1838: 91) , with which it is synonymized by some recent authors ( Pelser et al. 2000, Schuiteman et al. 2008, Ormerod et al. 2021). However, in a series of monographic works, it is kept as a separate species ( Seidenfaden 1975, Pearce & Cribb 2002, Clayton 2002: 52). With some uncertainty, we also keep it separately in Vietnam before studying more collections from Eastern Indochina. The plant reported for Java ( Comber 1990) has flowers twice as large as those reported in the protologue and most probably represents another species, rather than belonging to the Coelogyne sect. Speciosae Pfitzer & Kraenzlin in Engler (1907: 28) rather than C. sect. Fuliginosae Pfitzer & Kraenzlin l.c. (1907: 33).
Studied specimens:— VIETNAM, limestone area in Hoa Binh Province, September 2014, Chu Xuan Canh, s.n. ( LE01059405 https://en.herbariumle.ru/?t=occ&id=10290) .
