Type material: Holotype male, CHINA: Hainan Province, Changjiang County, Bawangling Nature Reserve, 11.v.1989, light trap, X. Wang (BDN. No. 05834). Paratype: 1 male, data as in holotype.
Etymology: Named after the type locality.
Diagnostic characters: The species differs from other members of the subgenus by the following combination of characters: squama with 3 setae; R4+5 with 14–20 setae; a high foreleg ratio (2.36); and nearly Lshaped superior volsella lacking basal inner setae.
Male (n = 2)
Total length 1.90–1.95 mm. Wing length 1.15–1.25 mm. Total length / wing length 1.56–1.65. Wing length / length of profemur 2.05–2.30.
Coloration. Head brown with yellow palpomeres. Thorax yellowish brown with darker vittae, postnotum and preepisternum; halteres dark brown. Foreleg brown; mid and hind legs with femora and tibiae yellowish brown, tarsi yellow. Abdominal segment I and hypopygium brown, other segments yellow.
Head. AR 0.80–1.08; ultimate flagellomere 280–390 µm long. Temporal setae 7–9, including 2 inner verticals, 4 outer verticals, and 1–3 postorbitals. Clypeus with 7–9 setae. Tentorium 95–98 µm long; 15–20 µm wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 20–23, 28–30, 53–68, 68–73, 100–103.
Wing ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). VR 1.30–1.35. R with 16–18 setae, R1 with 2–6, R4+5 with 14–20 setae. Squama with 3 setae. Anal lobe weak.
Thorax. Dorsocentrals 10, including 2 humerals; acrostichals 7–10; prealars 2–3. Scutellum with 6–8 setae.
Legs. Scale of foretibia 23–25 µm long, triangular with rounded apex ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 B). Spur of midtibia 43–45 µm long, including 23–25 µm long comb; un-spurred comb 20–23 µm long. Spur of hind tibia 48–50 µm long, including 25–28 µm long comb; un-spurred comb 20–23 µm long. Width at apex of foretibia 38–38 µm, of midtibia 35–38 µm, of hind tibia 38–40 µm. Hypopygium ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C–E). Anal tergite bands not fused basally. Tergite IX with 2–4 median setae. Laterosternite with 2–3 setae. Anal point 23–32 µm long, slender, with basal half tapering and apical half parallelsided. Phallapodeme 63–65 µm long, transverse sternapodeme 40–43 µm long. Gonocoxite 95–125 µm long. Superior volsella ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C) abruptly bent medially, with 1 strong lateral seta medially and 2–3 short, subapical seta. Inferior volsella 95–125 µm long, slender, apically swollen, with 1 strong apical seta projecting caudad, and 9–12 orally directed setae some of which are split apically. Gonostylus 118–135 µm long, with 5–6 setae along inner margin and 1 apical seta. HR 0.81–0.93; HV 1.44–1.50, 1.61.
Distribution. The species was collected in a mountain area in Hainan Province in Oriental China.
