Remarks: The presence of this species in North America needs confirmation. Christiansen & Bellinger (1980) believed that Nearctic records of the species “have to be essa or ripperi ”. Fjellberg (1985) considered H. essa to be synonymous with H. pannosa . Babenko et al. (1994) speculated that H. essa , H. pannosa , and H. devia may all be junior synonyms of the widespread H. assimilis . Some of these opinions are based on the study of extant types, while others rely on morphological similarities and need further investigation.
General distribution: considered cosmopolitan.
