Description. For description and illustrations see Anker (2007).
Size. cl 2.7–5.1 mm, tl of largest specimens at least 14.0 mm.
Colour in life. Uniform yolk-yellow or orange-yellow ( Fig. 14e View FIGURE 14 ).
Type locality. Nassau , New Providence, the Bahamas .
Distribution. Originally described from the Bahamas ( Rankin 1898), later reported from the western and southern Caribbean ( Chace 1972; Anker 2007; present study); Bermuda ( Verrill 1922; present study) and northeastern Brazil (Atol das Rocas) ( Anker 2007); herewith reported for the first time from several localities in Panama ( Isla Grande, Portobelo, Bocas del Toro) and Costa Rica (Cahuita).
Ecology. Near-shore sand flats, usually with seagrass and rubble, rocks, shells etc.; under rocks and in rubble at shallow depths (0.5–1.5 m).
Remarks. As mentioned above, S. ortmanni appears to be variable in the pilosity of the carapace and abdomen, as well as in the development of the rostral carina. For instance, the smaller specimen from Bahía de Ascensión and the specimen from Bermuda are distinctly more setose than their presumed conspecifics from Panama and Costa Rica, almost approaching condition typically found in S. wehrtmanni sp. nov. (see above). The carapace of most Panamanian specimens actually appears glabrous at first glance; only a few short setae can be seen by illuminating the carapace from the sides. The rostral carina appears to be better developed and reaching further posteriorly in the specimens from Bermuda and Atol das Rocas compared to those from Panama, in which the carina is virtually absent ( Fig. 12d View FIGURE 12 ). These differences cannot be satisfactorily explained at present time, but they strongly suggest the S. ortmanni populations are genetically sub-structured, calling for a molecular analysis of the entire S. ortmanni group, including S. carvachoi and two eastern Pacific forms identified as “ S. ortmanni ” in previous studies (e.g., Ríos 1992). The Pacific material of S. cf. ortmanni and S. cf. carvachoi is currently under study (Anker & Lazarus Agudelo, in prep.).
