7. Eugenia excelsa Berg (1857: 227) View in CoL ; Souza & Morim (2008: 652–683) [ Fig. 2H View FIGURE 2 ; Fig 5E View FIGURE 5 ]
Known from the Guianas to Brazil ( Govaerts et al. 2010) where it is widely distributed ( Sobral et al. 2010). In the Northeast region, it is found in the States of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte ( Silva 2009, Lourenço 2010) and Pernambuco and Sergipe.
Trees and shrubs to 3–8 m tall, leaves 4–13 × 1.3–5.0 cm, midvein flat or raised on adaxial lamina surface, raceme with main axis reduced, bracts elliptic, bracteoles linear, hypanthium and style glabrous, fruits globose. In areas of Pernambuco resting, samples were observed with a shrubby habit and shorter leaves, 4– 7.5 × 1.3–3.5 cm, compared to samples that occur in forests that are trees with larger leaves, 8–13 × 2.8–5 cm.
