Balaninus flavoscutellatus Roelofs 1874:160 .
Type. Japan: Honshu , Nagasaki, Holotype male ( ISNB).
Diagnosis. Oval; 3.4 mm (n = 2) in length; 1.9 mm (n = 2) in width; rostrum longer than half the body length; antennal club as long as or longer than funicular segments 4–7; scape longer than funicular segments 1–5; hind femoral tooth mediumsized; pronotal disc with diffuse triangular macula of narrow, elongate, white scales, with few testaceous scales mixed; abdominal sternite 1 shorter than 2 behind coxal cavity; pronotum with large ventomedial macula of elongate, clavate, cretaceous scales; scutellum large, longer than broad, clothed with cretaceous scales; sternites 1 and 2 densely clothed with elongate, clavate, cretaceous scales, remaining sternites with fuscopiceous scales. Distribution. China: Yunnan Province, Lijiang, 2800 m, new range extension; Japan: Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu.
Remarks. Appears similar to C. maculanigra , but smaller in size with darker scale pattern, although both species have short piceous vittae on interval 1 distad of scutellum. Can be distinguished by male genitalia, shorter median lobe, thicker basally then narrowing toward apex in lateral view. Median lobe of C. maculanigra uniformly thick to deflected apex in lateral view.
