Balaninus breviscapus Heller 1927:193 View in CoL .
Curculio breviscapus continentalis Voss 1958:92 .
Curculio tigrinus Morimoto 1960:103 View in CoL .
Type. Taiwan (Formosa): Holotype male, B. breviscapus, (SMTD) .
Diagnosis. Oval; 4.6–5.7 mm (mean = 5.1 mm, n = 8) in length; 2.4–3.1 mm (mean = 2.4 mm, n = 8) in width; rostrum margins dilated at base to antennal insertion, more pronounced in female than male, then narrowing to more cylindrical tube to apex; rostrum with apicoventral tuft of several elongate setae on both male and female specimens posterior to apex; antennal club robust; scape short in both male and female with scrobe ventral, inserted in basal third of rostrum; pronotum with three vittae, median and lateral, of narrow, elongate, white scales, the lateral macula more diffuse, with indication of basal macula; scutellum very small, dotlike, about as wide as broad; elytra with confused macula of ochroleucus scales with pronounced macula on subapical callus; hind femur not reaching abdominal apex; male metauncus bifid, female simple, short. Genitalia: median lobe of aedeagus 0.8 mm (n = 1) in length; 0.24 mm (n = 1) in width; in dorsal view margins broader at base for ¾ of length, then narrower to apex, in lateral view thicker at base, narrowing to apex, with apical deflection short; apodeme 1.1 mm (n = 1) in length (Figs. 87–89); female spermatheca ‘‘C’’ shaped, ramus obliquely erect and collum united with ramus, cornu broad at base narrowing to upturned truncated apex (n = 1) (Fig. 90).
Distribution. Japan; Formosa (Taiwan); China: Fujian Province, Jianyang, Shaowu, Kuatun, Congan; Zhejiang Province: Tianmushan.
Remarks. Scale pattern and general form distinguish C. brevicapus from the species in this group. Base of rostrum similar to C. lobatibasis , broad at base to antennal insertion, then cylindrical to apex.
