intermedius (Lutz, 1904) View in CoL (in Bourroul, 1904)
(subgenus Sabethinus )
Type locality. Near São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.
Bionomics. Immature stages of this species occur in bamboo internodes, usually with small holes produced by beetles or other animals ( Davis 1944b). Larvae of different species of mosquitoes such as Culex (Carrollia) iridescens ( Lutz, 1905) , Cx. (Microculex) neglectus Lutz, 1904 (in Bourroul, 1904), another Cx. (Mcx.) species and a species of Toxorhynchites (Lynchiella) have been found in association with larvae of this species ( Heinemann & Belkin 1979). In the Atlantic Forest, females of Sa. intermedius were captured during all months, except June (dry season) ( Guimarães & Arle 1984), with 35% of them feeding on human blood at ground level in contrast to 65% in the forest canopy ( Guimarães et al. 1985). Besides humans, females of Sa. intermedius have been collected with avian and horse bait ( Harbach 1994).
Arbovirus infection records. This species has been found naturally infected with Tucunduba and Xiburema viruses in Brazil ( Hervé et al. 1986).
Occurrence in Brazil. States of Amapá, Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins ( Lane & Cerqueira 1942; Lane 1953; Forattini et al. 1968, 1986a, 1986b, 1973; Guimarães & Arlé 1984; Guimarães et al. 1985, 2000 a, 2000b, 2000c; Guimarães & Victório 1986; Carvalho et al. 1997; Hutchings et al. 2005; Anjos & Navarro-Silva 2008; Tissot & Navarro-Silva 2008; Dos Santos Silva et al. 2010, 2017; Cardoso et al. 2010; Alencar et al. 2011, Alencar & Gil-Santana 2015; Moreno et al. 2011; Mascheretti et al. 2013; Laporta & Sallum, 2014; Müller et al. 2014; Abreu et al. 2019; Cunha et al. 2019; Stanzani et al. 2023).
