Type locality. Bayano Reservoir, Maje Island, Panama.
Bionomics. The immature stages of this species have been collected in sapucaia nut oviposition traps ( Vieira et al. 2020). Larvae of Sa. gymnothorax were observed preying on Haemagogus larvae in the laboratory, where larval development lasted 4‒5 weeks at 25°C (Harbach & Pertensen 1992).
Arbovirus infection records. None.
Occurrence in Brazil. States of Amazonas and São Paulo ( Mucci et al. 2015; Hutchings et al. 2016, 2018; Cunha et al. 2019).
Occurrence in other countries. Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and Panama ( Wilkerson et al. 2021).
