Type locality. Indian Ocean ( Chamisso & Eysenhardt 1821, as Geryonia tetraphylla ).
Material examined. Medusa—PB7_4, sampling site 1 (1), immature, 27ºC; PB7_14, sampling site 2 (1), mature, male, 27ºC; PB7_15, sampling site 2 (1), immature, 27ºC.
Description. Umbrella hemispherical (diameter 0.2–5.1 mm) with a well-developed velum. Manubrium small (0.3–0.8 mm long), situated on elongated cylindrical gastric peduncle (1.1 mm long) arising from a conical base (0.4 mm wide). Mouth with four simple lips, with nematocyst clusters along the margin. Straight ring canal and four wide radial canals. One to two broad centripetal canals in each quadrant. Four heart-shaped gonads (1.4 mm wide), on each radial canal, proximal, not touching the ring canal, and distal to the manubrium. Eight marginal tentacles, four large, hollow, perradial tentacles with nematocyst rings, and four small, solid, interradial tentacles. Eight closed ecto-endodermal statocysts, associated with the tentacle base on each marginal tentacle, each with one statolith.
Nematocysts (length x diam.). Perradial marginal tentacle, mostly macrobasic eurytele (13.8–16.0 x 4.6–5.6 µm), but also microbasic eurytele (8.1–10.6 x 4.2–4.9 µm). Interradial marginal tentacle, mostly macrobasic eurytele (14.0–16.2 x 4.9–6.3 µm), but also microbasic eurytele (8.5–9.2 x 4.0– 4.9 µm).
More detailed description in Mayer (1910) and Russell (1953).
Taxonomic status. Accepted. AphiaID 117568.
Remarks. One of the specimens had 15 parasites (Digenea) in the mesoglea, nine superimposed on three of its gonads, and six in the middle interradial region of the umbrella.
Distribution. Reported worldwidely in warm waters, occasionally occurring in temperate waters. Present along the Mexican Pacific coast in Baja California ( Bigelow 1909), Baja California Sur (Bahía Concepción and Punta Eugenia) ( Alvariño 1969; Alvariño 1999; Palomares-García et al. 2002), Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit ( Bigelow 1909; Alvariño 1969; Gómez-Aguirre 1991), Jalisco, Colima ( Bigelow 1909; Segura-Puertas 1984; Segura-Puertas et al. 2010; Jáquez-Bermudez et al. 2013; Gamero-Mora et al. 2015), Michoacán ( Bigelow 1909; Segura-Puertas 1984; Gamero-Mora et al. 2015), Guerrero (Acapulco and locality not specified) ( Bigelow 1909; Segura-Puertas 1984; Guerrero-Ruíz et al. 2014; Gamero-Mora et al. 2015) and Oaxaca ( Segura-Puertas 1984).
