Taxonomy. Eumops underwood: G. G. Goodwin, 1940 ,

“El Pedrero, 6 kilometers north of Chinaela; elevation about 3000 feet [= 914 m]; Department La Paz, Honduras.”

Two subspecies are recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution.

E.u.underwood:GG..G.Goodwin,1940—fromNWMexico(Chihuahua)SalongPacificslopeintoCentralAmerica,includingGuatemala,Belize,ElSalvador,Honduras,WNicaragua,andNWCostaRica.

Descriptive notes. Head-body 85-112 mm, tail 48-64 mm, ear 24-33 mm, hindfoot 15-20 mm, forearm 65-75 mm; weight 40-68 g. See general characteristics of the genus under the Black Bonneted Bat ( E. auripendulus ). Dorsal fur is grayish to reddish brown, with bases of hairs white, and ventral fur is slightly paler. Ears reach nose tip. Upperlip has wrinkles. Chromosomal complement has 2n = 48 and FN = 56.

Habitat. Usually xeric habitats including desert, dry forests, pine-oak forests, and rainforests primarily at lower elevations from sea level to ¢. 2000 m.

Food and Feeding. Underwood’s Bonneted Bat feeds primarily on beetles ( Coleoptera ), grasshoppers ( Acrididae ), and ants ( Formicidae ).

Breeding. Underwood’s Bonneted Bats are born in June-July in Arizona, and a lactating female was found in August in Costa Rica.

Activity patterns. Peak activity occurs in late evening. Underwood’s Bonneted Bats roost inside hollow trees, rock crevices, and roofs of buildings. They have been caught over ponds and watering holes.

Movements, Home range and Social organization. Underwood’s Bonneted Bats fly in straight lines and make audible shrieks.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Least Concern on The IUCN Red List.
