Lepidozia brevifolia Mitten View in CoL , J. Proceedings Linn. Soc. (Bot.) 5: 104 (1861)
Mitten, in the year 1861, first described the taxon Lepidozia brevifolia Mitten (1861: 104) based on a specimen collected from Himalayae Orientalis by J. D. Hooker (No. 1417) without type designation. There is a specimen in NY with collector number J. D.Hooker 1317 (Barcode NY00236747 ) collected by Hooker from Yumtong [=Yumthung], Sikkim, 12,000 ft. on 5 th September 1849 ( Fig. B View FIGURE B 1). Thiers (1983) noted that the holotype is present in NY with its isotype at BM. Leonard T. Ellis, Senior Curator, BM is of the same opinion and mentioned that Mitten had mislabeled the specimen as ‘1317’ rather than ‘1417’ and this was very common in Mitten’s herbarium (L. Ellis pers. comm., 2021). In herbarium G, there are specimens G14981 [an old G accession number] collected by J.D. Hooker (Barcode G00115203) cited as original, collected from Sikkim, 12,000 ft. ( Fig. B View FIGURE B 2); G14982 [an old G accession number] collected by J.D. Hooker ( Fig. B View FIGURE B 3) and specimen G14983 [an old G accession number] collected by W.Gollan from Dehra Dun (N.W. India) on 14 th October 1900 ( Fig. B View FIGURE B 4). Meanwhile, Sharma and Srivastava (1993) without providing any reason, considered the specimens G14981 and G14982 [old G accession numbers] both collected by J.D. Hooker (G) as isotypes. Both of the above-mentioned specimens are not cited in the protologue, therefore, could not be considered as isotypes. Specimens G14981 and G14982 [old G accession numbers] both collected by J.D. Hooker will be considered merely as specimens collected by J.D. Hooker. Sharma and Srivastava (1993) may have been unaware of Thiers (1983) publication.
