2) Anchovia clupeoides (Swainson 1839) View in CoL ;
Zabaleta Anchovy; Hachudo,Anchoveta Bocona ( Figs. 2C View FIG ).
Diagnosis: This species differs from the other species of the family occurring in the freshwaters of the country (Atlantic) by the following combination of characters: gill rakers very numerous, over 100 on lower limb of first gill arch (vs. usually less than 25 in the other species); and maxilla long, with its posterior tip reaching to or slightly beyond the preopercular margin (vs. maxilla short, with its tip not reaching the preopercular margin).
Basis of the record: A single specimen was captured in the río Pacuare, near the mouth of the river, Siquirres, Limón (10.21952, -83.28254), at 8 m. a.s.l., on November 17, 2004, by Jorge Picado (UCR 2840-005).
Remarks: This species inhabits estuarine areas and coastal environs; it could be considered as an opportunistic visitor of freshwater ecosystems ( Robertson & Van Tassell 2019).
