Distribution: Global: Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Oceans; from southern Nova Scotia, Canada, to southern Brazil in the western Atlantic, from southern France to Angola in the eastern Atlantic and from southern Guatemala to southern Colombia in the Eastern Pacific; entering estuaries and littoral lagoons and ascending river courses; Costa Rica: LN, RF, SJ, SC, Sa, To (Atlantic), Te, Be and Tr (Pacific), 0– 45 m.a.s.l., Per, Dia.

Occurrence and conservation status: Nat, VU.
