34. Calephorus compressicornis (Latreille, 1804)

Diagnosis: This is a small green or brown grasshopper species readily recognized by its laterally compressed antennae, conical pointed head profile, complex of nodules on various veins of the forewing used for song, and characteristics flight crepitation.

Habitats: The species is found in short grass and irrigated fields. It is graminivorous. In Egypt it has been recorded being found on grasses as well as among vegetables and field crops.

Material examined: Al Shati Region: Idri , 1 ♂, 1 ♀, on grass, 16.i.1995 ; Tarut , 1♂, 3♀, on grass, 11.i.1995 .

Localities: Tripolitania: Ain Zara, Engilla, Tripoli; Fezzan: Idri, Tarot.

Distribution: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tibesti, Senegal, Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo, Madagascar, S. Europe.

Remarks: Earlier recorded from Troplitania by Werner (1908 a), Ghigi (1913), I. Bolivar (1915), and Salfi (1929).
