Diagnosis (after Gabryś 1989; Wohltmann et al. 2007; Stälstedt et al. 2016, modified); for synonymy see Southcott (1961), Gabryś (1989) and Beron (2008).
Adult. Large to moderately large Erythraeidae . Colouration reddish to brownish. Two eyes on each side of aspidosoma. Specific, conical spines—conalae always present on palptibia and, very often, on palpgenu. Dorsal opisthosomal setae simple (setiform) or modified. Legs long, genua and tibiae III and IV with serratalae weakly to strongly developed.
Deutonymph. Similar to adult but smaller and with sparser setation; urvulva of comparable size to anal sclerite or smaller; conalae of palptibia and palpgenu, if present, not well developed.
Larva. Eyes, each composed of double lens placed laterally to scutum. Scutum oval or trapezoidal in outline, with two pairs of trichobothria and two pairs of nonsensillary setae.
Distribution. Worldwide.
Type species: Acarus phalangoides De Geer, 1778 .
