Ardea purpurea manilensis Meyen, 1834a: 102 View in CoL .
Now: Ardea purpurea manilensis Meyen, 1834a . See Hartert (1920: 1234).
Syntype: ZMB 12061 ( Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 66 or 67), skin, unsexed, collected by Meyen in “ October ” [= 1 October 1831; see Meyen 1835: 258] in “ Manila ” [= Talim Island, Luzon, Philippines; see below].
Type locality. Meyen (1834a: 103) listed “ Manila ” (he used the name for both the city and the island) as the type locality, adding that the bird is common “an dem grossen See im Innern der Insel ” (“on the large lake inside the island”), i.e. at Laguna de Bay. In his travel report, Meyen (1835: 258) specified that he collected these herons on 1 October on Talim Island . We thus ascertain the type locality as Talim Island, Luzon , Philippines [14.36°N, 121.23°E]. GoogleMaps
Remarks. Meyen (1834a) did not specify the type series, but Lichtenstein (1832) listed three relevant specimens that constitute the type series. Only one of them was registered in the inventory catalogue of the ZMB, while the other two (an adult and a juvenile according to Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 66 or 67, and 68, respectively; both collected on 1 October 1831 on Talim Island) were probably exchanged by Lichtenstein soon after their receipt. Sharpe (1898: 64) and Hartert (1920: 1234) misspelled the subspecies name as “ manillensis ”.
