Orthocephalus confinis Reuter, 1879 View in CoL B: 35 (syn. by Reuter, 1881: 179).
DIAGNOSIS: Easily recognized by the relatively large body size, dorsum uniformly dark brown, head dark brown except for small spot along each eye, antennal segment II incrassate with apical part three× as wide as antennal segment III (fig. 1), dorsum clothed with scarce flattened silver setae (figs. 22 F, 23 C) and dark simple setae. Aedeagus with two spicules, long spicule straight, short spicule slightly curved and 1/3 as long as long spicule (fig. 7). Dorsal labiate plate with large, triangular sclerotized rings and short, thin sclerotized area adjacent to inner margin of each ring (fig. 14). Females can be confused in appearance with those of O. coriaceus but in that species the dorsum, abdomen, and pleurites are clothed with dense silver scalelike setae, the antennal segment II is not strongly incrassate, the evaporatorium is at least partly yellowish or dark brown, and the dorsal labiate plate with its medial sclerites as long as or slightly shorter than the sclerotized ring (fig. 14).
REDESCRIPTION: Male: Macropterous, length 6.0–6.7. COLORATION (fig. 1): Body uniformly dark brown to black, except for small yellow rounded spot near inner margin of eye and yellowish stripe along posterior margin of eye; membrane uniformly pale brown. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Vertex distinctly rugose or with shallow punctation, frons shiny, with shallow transverse striae converging to midline, pronotum, scutellum, and hemelytra distinctly rugose. Dorsum and pleurites with adpressed, moderately flattened silver setae (figs. 22 F, 23 C); body with dark semiadpressed simple setae, rather long, bristlelike on head, antennal segments II-IV, margins of pronotum, base of hemelytra, anterior margin of femur, and terminal segments of abdomen, shorter, pale brown to dark brown elsewhere; antennal segment I with 2 spines. STRUC- TURE AND MEASUREMENTS: Body 3.1–3.4× as long as width of pronotum. Head: Narrow, apically tapering, 1.2–1.4× as wide as high; frons flattened, mandibular plates long and narrow; depression along hind margin of vertex distinctly visible (figs. 20 C, 21 B, E); antennal fossa located at a distance from inferior margin of eye (fig. 20 C); antennal segment I longer than diameter of eye; eyes not protruding; antennal segment II incrassate, apically 3× as wide as antennal segment III, 0.8–1.0× as long as basal width of pronotum, 1.1– 1.5× as long as width of head; vertex 2.0–2.8× as wide as eye; eye located at a short distance from anterior margin of pronotum; labium reaching middle coxa. Thorax: Pronotum 1.8–2.2× as wide as long and 1.5–1.7× as wide as head with slightly concave or straight posterior margin, lateral margin slightly carinate apically, calli slightly raised; hind femur relatively long and narrow, approximately 1.5× as wide as middle femora. GENITALIA: Aedeagus (fig. 7) with two spicules, long spicule longer than dorsal wall of theca, straight, apically and basally tapering, directed to theca mouth, short spicule shorter than dorsal wall of theca, somewhat curved, with wide base, directed to secondary gonopore, and 1/3 as long as the longer spicule; parameres as in fig. 10.
Female: Brachypterous, rarely macropterous; length 4.1–5.6. COLORATION: As in male. VESTITURE: As in male. STRUCTURE AND MESAUREMENTS: Body 2.2–2.6× as long as width of pronotum. Head: Frons without transverse striae, smooth or slightly rugose, head 1.2–1.3× wider than high; vertex 2.6–3.3× as wide as eye; antennal segment II 0.6–0.9× as long as basal width of pronotum, 0.9–1.3× as long as width of head. Thorax: Pronotum 1.9–2.3× as wide as long and 1.2–1.5× as wide as head, with concave posterior margin; hemelytra ranging in length from reaching anterior margin of abdominal segment IV to covering all abdomen, typically reaching abdominal segments VII or VIII; cuneus delimited by very short and shallow suture; claval commissure as long as inner claval margin; posterior and lateral margins rounded. GENITALIA: Dorsal labiate plate large, sclerotized rings large, triangular, with short and narrow sclerotized area adjacent to inner margin of each ring (fig. 14); posterior wall of bursa copulatrix with uniformly sclerotized trapeziform sclerite, incision on the anterior margin narrow and not reaching middle of sclerite, anterior angles smooth or slightly ribbed, not dentate; posterior margin with large sclerites at sides (fig. 18); vulva with pair of straight sclerites, not forming circle (as in fig. 19, O. styx ).
DISTRIBUTION: Widely distributed in the Palearctic Region, west to France and east to Yakutia Republic of Russia. This species extends as far north as Finland, Karelia, Yaroslavl, and Perm Provinces, Krasnoyarsk Territory and Central Yakutia, and as far south as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the Asian part of Kazakhstan. New records for Belarus and Azerbaijan.
HOSTS: This species was reported from Campanula rapunculoides L. ( Campanulaceae ) by Reuter (1891), from Campanula sp. (Campanulaceae) by Hoberlandt (1963), from Achillea sp. (Asteraceae) and Artemisia sp. (Asteraceae) by Tamanini (1982). Putshkov (1967) provided information on hosts associations of O. brevis . According to his observations, the species was sampled from Campanula glomerata (Campanulaceae) in Voronezh Province, and in Krasnodar Province the common host was Phlomoides tuberosa (L.) (as Phlomis tuberosa L., Lamiaceae ).
