Lagenocarpus tristis View in CoL (A.St.-Hil.) Vitta, comb. nov.

Scleria tristis A.St. -Hil. (1833: 370), syn.nov. Type:— A. Saint Hilaire. Lectotype (designated here): P 130080!; isolectotypes P00272358!, P 272677!.

= Lagenocarpus adamantinus Nees (1842: 165) View in CoL , syn. nov. Type:—in montibus adamantibus proferentibus prope Tejuco et alibi, Martius. Lectotype (designated here): M 0008755!; isolectotype B!).

This species, endemic from the Diamantina Plateau in the State of Minas Gerais, is often identified as Lagenocarpus adamantinus Nees or even L. bracteosus C.B. Clarke (which occurs only at Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais). Cyperologists like J. O. Boeckeler and T. Koyama have not seen the Saint-Hilaire original material. Koyama (2004) places S. tristis in the synonymy of L. alboniger . Saint-Hilaire (1833) described in detail Scleria tristis in the first volume of his “Voyage dans le district des diamans”. There are three specimens of Saint-Hilaire at P and we have selected the material with an intact inflorescence as the lectotype. The type materials of L. adamantinus ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ) were examined personally by the first author. The labels on the left hand on the exsiccatae at M and B are both annotated by Nees von Esenbeck as “ Lagenocarpus adamantinus N ab E” indicating that he examined both materials. Therefore, we have chosen the material at M as lectotype because it has a more complete inflorescence with some fruits while the material at B is fragmentary. As Scleria tristis is an older name for the species, it has priority and a new combination in Lagenocarpus is necessary according to the Art. 11.1 and 11.4 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018).
