Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed on 2 June 2013, first dive, during ACIAR Aquarium Survey at Kavieng; another specimen photographed at St. KVG23 (east side of Bauddisson Island , Kavieng District ) by Serge Andréfouët on 21 Aug. 2014; a specimen observed at Nemto Island , New Hanover , 1– 50 m depth, St. T 23, on 7 Nov. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Mexico, north to southern Japan, Ogasawara and Hawaiian islands, south to Great Barrier Reef ( Australia), Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in clear lagoon and seaward reefs; juveniles among rocky boulders, adults on reef crests and slopes, 0–58 m depth. Marine.
