Melichthys niger (Bloch 1786) —Black triggerfish

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken at Kavieng, Kavieng District, 0–11 m depth, St. KR22, 5 June 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken on east side of Tsoileunung Island, southeast of New Hanover, at 6–21 m depth, St. KR124, in 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and temperate oceans. Found in seaward reefs, 2–75 m depth. Marine.
