Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Fedoryako (1981: 99); a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, east of New Hanover, St. KR154, at 6–20 m depth, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken on the north coast of Kavieng District, at 6–24 m depth, St. KR164, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marquesas Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands. Found in seaward coral and rocky reef slopes, often in silty habitat, sometimes with drifting seagrass, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
