Status at New Ireland. New record, based on NTUM 11187 (1 specimen, 35.6 mm SL, St. CP 4454-6, northeast of Bangatang). A specimen photographed at Kavieng on 5 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey; specimens photographed at Lissenung Island , Kavieng region by Dietmar Amon ; a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island , off eastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: South and East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Marshall, Society and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe Island and Tonga. Found in clear, coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs, hiding in deserted worm tubes or other small holes when alarmed, 0–75 m depth. Marine.
