Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Tigak Islands , Kavieng , New Ireland as Bolbometopon muricatus by Wright & Richards (1985: 73). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014 . Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 3 Sept. 2006 and 10 June 2009 ; others photographed at St. KVG23 (east side of Bauddisson Island , Kavieng District) by Serge Andréfouët on 21 Aug. 2014 .
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa east to Line and Phoenix islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Usually in groups, in lagoon and seaward coral reefs, in New Ireland area seen on the outer slope of the barrier reef, 1–40 m depth. Marine.
