Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Glyphidodon trifasciatus by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 67); reported from Kavieng, New Ireland by Kailola (1975: 165). KFRS and ZMH material. A specimen photographed in Kavieng region on 3 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 6 m depth, by Dean Tully on 15 Sept. 2012; a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands (eastern Indian Ocean) east to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia. Found in lagoons, passes and slopes of seaward coral reefs, among branches of staghorn Acropora corals, 1–15 m depth. Marine.
