Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens photographed in June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 14). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District , 10 m depth, by Dean Tully on 18 Sept. 2012; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island , off southeastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe, Tonga and Austral Islands. Juveniles found in semi-protected channels and on outer reef flats; adults under ledges and in caves of coral-rich lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs, 1–100 m depth. Marine.
