Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed on 3 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey in Kavieng District; others photographed at St. KVG18 (south side of Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District ) by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014, and at St. KVGPMT50 (southeast of New Hanover ) by Serge Andréfouët on 24 Aug. 2014; previously misidentified from New Ireland as Chaetodon trifasciatus (non Park, 1797) by Ahl (1923: 56, 60).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Malaysia and Indonesia east to Hawaiian, Line and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Found in coral-rich areas of coral reefs, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
