Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 5 m depth, by Dean Tully on 6 July 2011; a video of a specimen taken at Echuca Shoal, New Hanover, 15–34 m depth, St. KR 158, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands (eastern Indian Ocean) east to Hawaiian and Easter islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Solitary or in small groups, in lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 0–60 m depth. Marine.
