Kyphosus vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard 1825) View in CoL —Lowfin chub

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 7 and 21 June 2014. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 30 Sept. 2012; others photographed at St. KVG18 (south side of Bauddisson Island , Kavieng District ) by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Alexander Passage, off southeastern New Hanover , at 5–14 m depth, St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Réunion east to Hawaiian, Line and Marquesas islands, north to central Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), northern New Zealand, Tonga and Rapa. Found in groups, over hard bottoms covered with algae, on exposed reef flats and seaward coral reefs, 0–24 m depth. Marine.
