Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover by Ahl (1923: 104–105); a video of a specimen taken off Nusaum Island , Kavieng District, at 9–18 m depth, St. KR 76, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken in Senta Pass, east of New Hanover at 5–12 m depth, St. KR 114, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Solitary, in pairs or in small groups, on reef flats and in seaward coral reefs, 1–36 m depth. Marine.
