Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Lethrinus rostratus by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 66), based on ZMH 11821; reported from Matanalaua River, New Hanover as Lethrinella miniata (non Forster in Bloch & Schneider, 1801) by Munro (1958: 202), from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985: 73), and from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa east to Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary or in groups, on sand or rubble bottoms adjacent to coral reefs and in lagoon habitats, 1–185 m depth. Marine.
