Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey , and by Barry C. Russell on 7 and 21 June 2014. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 24 July 2010; a video of a specimen taken from Senta Passage, off eastern New Hanover , 5–16 m depth, at St. KR 118, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Northern New Guinea, southern Papua New Guinea to Queensland ( Australia). Found on open muddy or silty substrates in protected bays or estuaries, or in shallow coastal areas and coral or rocky reefs, juveniles among seagrass, 1–50 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
Remarks. This species was treated by some authors as Diagramma picta (non Thunberg 1792), a species that is widespread in the Indo-West Pacific but is replaced by D. labiosum in Queensland ( Australia) and Papua New Guinea.
