Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey. Species name spelled oeyena in original description; the spelling oyena is an unjustified emendation in prevailing usage and can be continued.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found on inshore soft bottoms adjacent to coral reefs, 0–20 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
