Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Carteret Harbour, Lambom, New Ireland by Peters (1877: 831); reported from Drei Inseln Harbour, New Hanover by Munro (1958: 190), and from Port Sulphur, New Ireland by Kailola (1975: 131); subsequently reported from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985: 73), and from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 31 Dec. 2006. KFRS material.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Kiribati (Line Islands) and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Adults found in coral reefs, juveniles in seagrass beds or mixed sand and coral habitats, 0–100 m depth. Marine.
