Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group , Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). A photograph taken on 1 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey; specimens observed at Kavieng fish market by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014; a video of a specimen taken from Alexander Passage, off southeastern New Hanover, 5–14 m depth, at St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Kiribati (Line Islands) and Marquesas Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Queensland ( Australia), Norfolk Island and Rapa, introduced to Hawaiian Islands. Found in lagoon and semi-protected seaward coral and rocky reefs; juveniles sometimes in estuaries and the lower parts of freshwater streams, 0–75 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
