Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Mozambique Channel, Comores and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands and Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to off northwestern Australia, New South Wales ( Australia) and Tonga. Schooling above deep reefs or rock bottom, 40–400 m depth. Marine.
