Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Allen & Erdmann (2012: 375). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island , Kavieng District , 8–10 m depth, by Dean Tully on 1 July 2011 and 18 Sept. 2012; others photographed at St. KVG24 (off northwestern Bauddisson Island ) by Serge Andréfouët on 22 Aug. 2014; a specimen in a video of a specimen taken at Anelaua Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–16 m depth, St. KR 98, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Marshall and Tuamotu islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. In loose aggregations hovering in mid-water in caves or above branching corals, 3–158 m depth. Marine.
